A walk through a cemetery changed everything.

On weekends, the quickest and safest path to the local farmers market cut right through it, and so we walked those paths often, my oldest daughter and I, past the rows of stone markers and the names etched into them.

She was young and curious — the way children are before the world teaches them to stop asking questions. What did they do for fun? What school did they go to? Did they have a dog?

My daughter had asked the most natural questions in the world, and the internet — for all its vastness — had almost nothing to offer her.

That moment stayed with me. The idea that an entire life could pass through this world and leave almost no trace beyond a stone and a few lines of text felt like something worth trying to fix.
