Buddy

Golden Retriever

April 2012 โ€” June 3, 2025

Their Story

Buddy came home with us on a rainy Saturday in April 2012 โ€” eight weeks old, all paws and ears, and already convinced that every person he met was his new best friend. He slept the whole car ride home curled up in a laundry basket, and from that first night on, he never slept anywhere but at the foot of our bed.

He grew into ninety pounds of golden fur and pure optimism. He learned to open the back door by himself, taught our kids to walk (they'd pull themselves up on his fur and he'd stand perfectly still), and never once met a tennis ball he didn't think was the greatest thing ever made. Our mail carrier kept treats in her bag just for him.

In his later years he slowed down, the way all good dogs do. The long hikes became short walks, and the short walks became afternoons in his favorite sunny patch by the living-room window. But his tail never stopped wagging when any of us walked through the door.

Buddy crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully on June 3, 2025, at thirteen years old, with his family all around him. The house is much too quiet now. We'd give anything for one more muddy paw print on the kitchen floor.

Getting to Know Them

How We Met

We went to the shelter 'just to look.' He was the only puppy in the litter who walked straight over and fell asleep on my shoe. We filled out the paperwork that afternoon.

Their Personality

Endlessly gentle and a little bit goofy. He was scared of the vacuum and the neighbor's cat, but he'd put himself between the kids and anything he thought might hurt them.

Favorite Things

Tennis balls (he had a stash of at least forty), peanut butter, car rides with the window down, and the stuffed hedgehog he carried around for eleven years.

Silly Habits

He'd 'sing' along whenever anyone played the harmonica, and he insisted on bringing you a shoe every time you came home โ€” never the pair, always just one.

Favorite Spot

The sunny patch on the living-room rug by the big window, from about 2 to 4 every afternoon. We moved the couch so he'd have more room.

A Favorite Memory

His first time at the lake. He launched off the dock like he'd been doing it his whole life, swam straight out to the ducks, and then looked back at us like, 'Why aren't you coming?'

What We'll Miss Most

The thump of his tail on the floor when we said his name. The way he'd rest his head on your knee when you were sad, like he just knew.

Final Words

You were the best boy, Buddy. Thank you for thirteen perfect years. Save us a spot in the sun.

Memories

โ€œBuddy greeted us at the fence every single morning for ten years. Our kids learned to throw a ball because of him. The street won't be the same.โ€

โ€œTwelve years of treats and he never once forgot me. Best part of my route. I'm going to miss that big golden face in the window.โ€

โ€œBuddy was the gentlest patient we ever had โ€” he'd lean his whole weight against you and wag through every exam. It was an honor to care for him.โ€
